Even if you read this at 10 in the morning.

Who says you can’t have frozen yogurt as a healthy breakfast with the same amount of calcium, protein, and live active probiotic cultures?

Froyo flavors

Chocolate Add a half cup of Dutch cacao powder, a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract, and half a mug of sweetener.

Almond butter: Add a half cup of almond butter or peanut butter before churning. If you like, garnish with peanuts.

Coconut: Add a quarter of a teaspoon of coconut extract or yogurt. Add shredded coconut or toasted coconut flakes at the end.

Vanilla: Mix a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and instant coffee granules into plain yogurt. Garnish the yogurt with chocolate shavings or coffee beans.

What flavor will be your first creation?

Peanut butter and mini-chocolate chips sound like the perfect recipe for frozen yogurt. Apple pie froyo with cinnamon and chopped apples would also be delicious.

Frozen Greek yogurt recipe ingredients

You will need vanilla or plain yogurt, non-dairy yogurt, a fourth cup of sweetener of your choice, and any mix-ins you like.

You can use regular yogurt or Greek yogurt in full-fat or low-fat. Try cashew yogurt or coconut milk yogurt to make vegan frozen yogurt.

All-purpose sweeteners, such as maple syrup, honey, or agave, can be anything. They also include white or unrefined table sugar, date sugar, or erythritol, used to make sugar-free frozen yogurt.

Sweet or tart frozen yogurt

If you like tart froyo, use only one-fourth cup of sweetener and unsweetened yogurt. You can also use sweetened yogurt without adding any sweetener.

Double the sweetener if you want a sweeter frozen yogurt, similar to what you get at Menchies, Co, STCO, Sweet Frog, or Tutti Frutti stores.

Make frozen yogurt at Home.

Read the instructions that come with your particular model and brand of ice cream maker. Some machines need preparation in advance.

Whisk the yogurt with the sweetener. Pour the sweetened yogurt into the ice cream machine and churn it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Mine usually takes me ten to fifteen minutes to become ice cream-like. This can be affected by humidity, the brand of yogurt, and the machine.

Add any desired additions and turn off the ice cream machine. Serve immediately or freeze in a container for up to 30 minutes to get a more firm texture.

Keep leftovers for up to one month in an airtight container. Thaw leftovers 15 to 20 minutes before eating.

No ice cream machine

Option one: Freeze yogurt in an ice-cube tray and blend it in a Vitamix blender or Blendtec machine until creamy.

Option two: Freeze it in a shallow container. Stir the slush every 30 minutes, up to three hours. This takes time, and the result will never be as creamy, but it is still delicious.

Option three: Instead of ice cream, pour the liquid mixture into popsicle cups (or paper cups). For popsicles, you’ll want to double up on the sweetener.

Tips and Tricks for Recipes

It’s best to serve homemade ice cream the day you make it. It will still taste great for up to one month in the fridge if you store it in an airtight container.

If you freeze it for longer than a day, you’ll likely end up with a block. Just make sure you thaw your frozen yogurt for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

If you own a basic Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker like me, ensure the bowl is frozen solid for at least 24 hours before use.
