Chocolate mug cake recipe in the microwave

I could tell I spent the entire day in front of an oven baking this cake.

The chocolate mug cakes took just one minute to make.

Yes, really.

It’s easy to make and uses the pantry staples you always have. No eggs are required. You can make this chocolate dessert in your microwave to satisfy a chocolate craving.

Even better, you can portion out all the dry ingredients and store them in Ziploc bags to make the recipe even faster when it’s time to eat.

Chocolate mug cake flavors

Chocolate Peanut Butter: Omit oil from the recipe and replace it with one or two teaspoons of almond butter or peanut butter.

Nutella mug cake: Add a tablespoon of your favorite chocolate hazelnut butter instead of oil. This Homemade Nutella Recipe is excellent. Add more Nutella to the top!

Chocolate Peppermint: Stir a fourth teaspoon of pure peppermint oil into the liquid ingredients before mixing everything to make a batter.

Dark Chocolate Coconut: Use Coconut Oil, and top your finished mug cake off with dark chocolate chips, coconut flakes, and a scoop of Coconut Ice Cream.

Mocha Mug Cake: Mix half a teaspoon of instant coffee granules (regular or decaf) with the dry ingredients of the cake.

Orange Chocolate: Add one teaspoon of orange zest to the mug and stir.

Frosting options

Decorate your chocolate cake single-serving with chopped nuts or walnuts, mini chocolate chips, hot fudge, or caramel sauce.

This homemade Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting is what I used.

You can also frost your cake with whatever you like, including store-bought or homemade frosting, powdered or melted sugar, banana slices, strawberries, cherries, or blueberries.

How to make chocolate mug cakes

Mix all the dry ingredients in a small bowl or cereal bowl. Stir well to ensure that the baking powder and salt are distributed evenly.

Pour liquid into the bowl, stir until it forms a batter for chocolate cake, then pour in a ramekin or coffee cup that can be used in the microwave or oven.

If you don’t plan to eat your cake right out of the mug or mugs, ensure the dish is well-greased before adding the batter.

Microwave for 30 to 40 seconds (or more, depending on the wattage of your microwave). Bake your mug cakes in the oven at 140 degrees for 14 minutes or until the toothpick inserted in the middle comes out mostly clean.

Mug cake recipe ingredients

You will need the following ingredients to make a single-serving recipe: cocoa powder, flour, sugar, baking soda, milk, vanilla extract or oil, and banana.

You can use regular cocoa powder unsweetened for the first teaspoon. You can use Dutch cocoa powder or a familiar additional for the first two teaspoons.

Many readers have told us that applesauce, Greek Yogurt, sweet potato, pumpkin, or mashed banana can be substituted for a fat-free or low-fat mug cake. This is a substitution I haven’t tried and cannot recommend.

Vegan chocolate mug cake

Creating a vegan and dairy-free version of the mug cake is easy because it is naturally eggless.

Use plant-based milk such as almond, coconut, or soy. Choose vegan toppings for chocolate chips, frosting, or ice cream.

Use either gluten-free all-purpose flour or oats flour for a chocolate mugcake. The recipe also includes a version of the mug cake that is flourless.

Ingredients

1 tbsp Cocoa Powder

Dutch cocoa or regular additional cocoa powder, 2 tsp

Try this Keto Mug Cake.

1/8 tsp of salt

Sweetener of your choice, 2 tbsp

1/4 tsp Baking Powder

It still tastes great if you substitute applesauce or banana mashed. I haven’t tested it.

3 tbsp of milk of choice

1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

Mix the dry ingredients very, very thoroughly. Add liquid and stir. Transfer to a small dish, ramekin, or coffee mug. You can either microwave for 40-60 seconds, depending on the wattage of your microwave, OR bake in 350F ovens for 14 minutes. Spray your dish with cooking spray first, and wait until the mugcake is cool before removing it. The post includes a list of frosting ideas!
